The Temporary Theatre is a kind of nomadic machine, which concerns itself with the presentation of fantasy and the mediation of reality. And so we envisioned The Eye as an embodiment of Fantasy, arriving as a glowing satellite soaring across the sky, eclipsing the moon, floating under the stars… a glowing UFO: born of whimsy; borne by the wind. Suddenly, it drops out of the sky, falling swiftly past the peaks of Sydney’s CBD – landing just out of sight. Somewhere deep within Hyde Park, The Eye meets the ground, breaking apart, parts tumbling and coming to rest in garden beds. And so the fantasy of The Eye and the reality of urban Sydney are met in a hybrid territory resembling a fallen space station – part landscape; part machine.
