Surface to Volume

Due to the large amount of water use in flower market, the water treatment facility was incorporated to the building, as well as public programs such as aquarium, bathhouse and synthetic garden to create an isolated escape within the city of downtown Los Angeles. The monolithic surface expands with its own gravity as it stores water, and it challenges to create atmosphere of jungle with its fixed mass and adaptable elements that surrounds the building. Each mass has its own program, and interior space according to how much water is used. For example, the aquarium and the bathhouse, which has high usage of water, has thick wall space for water that surrounds the interior, and the flower market and picnic areas have garden walls to cultivate flowers within the building. The sauna, which is embedded in the ground, has no water source but lets the smoke out through the tube. The small hanging elements reacts with the weather to have its own internal micro-climate, transforms to circulation, or opens up to provide shades for outdoor market space during weekends.
