Our site in Downtown Los Angeles is surrounded by communities like Little Tokyo, the Toy District, Chinatown and the Arts District that create a diverse and unique cultural area. The project focuses on a juxtaposition of formal systems and the purity of different geometries originating from the same vein. The facade emanates from the pattern creating both a thinness of surface and a thickness of volume. The strategy of patterning through a framing system provides opportunities of translucency and openness according to programmatic need. A second layer of the framing system is used to provide a sense of depth and an opportunity for programmatic elements. The volume of the vaulted system emerges from the surface of the framing system. By looking at the vault in terms of is organization and structural capabilities, a new understanding of a vaulted system on a different scale is explored. The system acts to enclose and surround the programmatic elements, such as the theater and the museum, with its opaque volumetric quality. Both the concavity and convexity of the vaults are used to create different atmospheric effects and provide intricacies in both interior and exterior spaces.
