Steel is already a prominent aspect of the Pybus Market experience, so the main aesthetic concept is to visually express steel’s role in the structure of the new Annex and meanwhile utilize the warmth of wood and weathered copper as a subtle modernization. The massing steps back to respect the river and adjacent bike path and to allow the more permanent occupants (administration staff) sweeping views of the area’s natural beauty. The rooftop is also conceivably accessible to the casual visitor. The use of weathered copper on the two preeminent walls establishes hierarchy and allows visitors a natural wayfinding tool for the main entrance.
Inside, visitors have direct access to the main event spaces or to the lobby / art exhibit space. A central stair teams up with a light-well to entice visitors up to the meeting rooms. Teens / kids have a space on the second floor in the casual loft-type space. The third floor is dedicated to staff, with offices and a private meeting room. The green roof keeps heat gain low while blending views from the roof into the landscape beyond. The larger event hall has a generous ceiling height with soaring steel trusses above, stow-away seating and access to the kitchen. The smaller hall could conceivably have large operable doors to allow flowing indoor/outdoor use. Both event halls have wood louvers to offer privacy and light simultaneously and both have dedicated storage space. Together these dynamic spaces offer many configuration options.
