About

Carl Muehleisen is an Architect based in New York City. He grew up amongst a family of artists, makers and educators from whom he learned that the pencil is an extension of the imagination. With a surname translating from Middle High German to “mill-iron”, Carl embraces his ancestral connection to the art of making.

Having received a primary education in the classics, Carl sought a modern university which championed the developing advancements in the field. He went on to receive his Professional degree in Architecture from New Jersey Institute of Technology, graduating with numerous design awards and honors in 1999. During his education, he trained in Trenton, NJ where he was exposed to public and municipal projects across the state. He continued his apprenticeship in the New York metropolitan area at a distinctive design/build firm that specializes in design, digital fabrication and construction management.

In 2003, Carl joined the studio of renowned artist, Maya Lin. During his tenure at Maya Lin Studio, Carl oversaw her architectural building projects as well as select art commissions. With intense detailing, responsible sourcing, material sustainability and low environmental impact, the built work was exemplary of the highest craftsmanship and construction. His was an integral role in the studio, which ranged in diverse works at challenging sites for both private and institutional clients both domestic and abroad.

In early 2007, Carl established his own practice, OMAS:WORKS, with longtime friend Brian O’Brian. The rigorous design practice cast a net of unique projects across New York City, New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and eastern Long Island. The work expanded to Kansas, the Pacific Northwest, southern California, and as far north as Canada, and beyond into Europe and Australia.

The practice exceled at cultivating the relationships amongst Owners, Contractors, budgets and the other myriad components that contribute to successful built work. The inherent manifesto that shaped each work was not the size or budget of the work, but with whom the work was being produced. With a personal understanding of each client and team, the practice sought to create an architecture that produced solutions, performed its duty and strived towards making each space sublime.

Interested in implementing this ethos into a broader typology, Carl joined the office of Nastasi Architects as Senior Architect in 2018. Working at a larger scale, the firm interacts with City Planners, Engineers and other design professionals to advance a modern architecture in projects ranging from urban and campus master plans, rehabilitation and redevelopments of historical urban city fabrics, public spaces and private developments. Each project, regardless of scale, exhibits the design rigor inherent to master building.

Carl maintains an international base of resources consisting of talented designers, architects and craftsmen. Having more than 20 years experience, Carl continues to horizontally expand his portfolio with a diverse range of clients, projects and building typologies. With a dedicated attention to the landscape, his clients and team, his work accentuates the art of making and ushers a detailed hand to the design and fabrication of form, materials, atmosphere and space

Carl is licensed by the State of New York and the State of New Jersey. He is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and is a member of the American Institute of Architects.
