Brian-Gerard Bessenaire

Beijing, CN

With every new project, I try to focus on a built response to local natural features that are specific to each site.  I believe that by allowing for the natural context to inform the built environment, each project will be a unique exploration of the boundaries between interior and exterior space, challenging the conventional definition of threshold.

In addition to my studio work I have served as the President of SCAD Project Green, served on the Executive Board of the USGBC Savannah chapter, and spent time managing a community garden.

Last year I moved from Savannah, Georgia to Beijing, China.  The work and experience is proving to be extremely challenging and rewarding, I look forward to every new project as they come.

BBAK Design Group, Design Partner

An arthouse design collaborative, BBAK Design Group seeks experiential richness, intellectual delight and hard-nosed practicality in both our designed product and in our design process. We feel that if you're not having fun, you're not doing it right, and we think hard work is by its nature hard play. We're no clowns, and we take our designs very, very seriously, but there is a lot of truth in a joke, and a smile lightens the mind and allows the creativity to dance. At BBAK, delight is a sustainable strategy.

BBAK Design Group is a collaborative design studio created by Brian Bessenaire and Andrew King in 2010 in order to develop sensible and provacative design solutions. A competition-based studio, BBAK offers a full range of design services, including non-licensed architectural services, drafting, design mediation, graphic and web design, research, and architectural writing. With a shared interest in formal and material exploration, sustainability and vernacular traditions, BBAK founders Brian and Andrew came together as students at Savannah College of Art and Design, collaborating on several studio design projects, as well as heading the leadership of Project Green, the schools sustainable design initiative.

Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal, Award

In 1931, the Grand Council of Alpha Rho Chi established the Alpha Rho Chi Medal to "encourage professional leadership by regarding student accomplishment; promote the ideals of professional service by acknowledging distinctive individual contributions to social life; and stimulate professional merit by commending qualities in the student not necessarily pertaining to scholarship".

The Alpha Rho Chi Medal is offered each year to over 100 schools of architecture, whose faculty select a graduating senior they feel best exemplifies these qualities.

The medal portrays Athena seated upon an Ionic capital with a skyscraper resting in the palm of her hand. The words "ALPHA RHO CHI" are arranged in an arch over her head.
