So I majorly suck for not posting anything for a month or so. Got bogged down in this whole applications business, then holiday travel, and now back to applications.
During that period, I:
- took the GREs
- figured out where I am applying
- sent a packet of information to my recommenders containing
mini-portfolio
draft personal statement
resume
checklist
applicable forms
I'm still in the process of editing the statement and the resume, but have been showing both to as many people as possible to get feedback. Edit, rewrite, edit, rewrite.
I spent this weekend researching color management and workflow, as my current setup is quite uncalibrated and therefore left to the whims of the color imps. Ended up springing for a ColorEyes setup to calibrate an old LaCie CRT and a new Dell widescreen LCD. Since I'm printing my portfolios myself, I want to have everything as controlled as possible. I'm also considering getting a custom printer ICC profile made for my printer/paper/ink combo.
Right now there's this excellent old Star Trek episode on TV about a captain trapped by brain-reading aliens who create alternate realities for him. Excellent.

So what schools did you decide to apply to?
I narrowed it down to a list of 7. Apparently I really want to make a bunch of portfolios. The finalists are:
- Harvard
- Yale
- Columbia
- Pratt
- UC DAAP
- U Mich
- Knowlton @ the OSU
We'll see how it goes. I just ordered $200 worth of ink for my printer.
Haha. Yeah I just printed out 6 portfolios myself. The more you apply to the more options you have....well in theory anyway. Michigan and OSU seem like pretty good programs, you ever get a chance to go visit those two? How about Syracuse?
That was my thinking exactly. I had it down to 4, and then realized that it's more important for me to go somewhere next year, and upped the pool. I applied to 10 schools undergrad, so decisiveness is not my forte. I did not get to visit UMich, but like the work that I've seen coming from students there, and someone here on archinect actually got me thinking about OSU. I didn't consider Syracuse- probably a little too remote for my liking. Not that Columbus is a boomtown, but it's probably a little more vibrant.
Aww. I wish I heard more about the random, non brand-name schools and their programs. I often find myself thinking "I wonder what UBC does for grad school" or "I wonder if there are any grad schools that are really into building something, like that Kansas undergrad studio" and "I wonder if there are any grad schools who don't care what everyone thinks about them, but are more interested in fostering great designers" etc etc... Not that the Ivies don't do all that, I'm sure they do, I'm just sick of hearing about the usual white east-coast suspects.
Although I am glad you put some solid midwestern schools on your listy, of course! I've been wondering what UMich's program is like.
Some of the very best students and teachers I have met so far in life were affiliated with Syracuse. The city may suck but I have formed a very good opinion of the school based on what seems to come out of there.
Where'd you go? What's your decision? I think this was one of the most helpful, unique blogs and would love to read the conclusion and denoument. If nothing else, we must put ourselves through school by organizing the Open House Tour Bus.
