    ALTER STUDIO

This is the first statment a group of students from my studio are working on, we named the group Alterstudio

"Alter-studio was initiated as a critical framework for the studio work on our final project and more generally of the process of producing an architectural project. Soon we came to realize that it might be more interesting if we look at Alter-studio not as a supporting system to the studio but rather we look at the studio as a pattern, and as the ultimate excuse for discussing Alter-studio. Since studio process is more or less an expected thing (including the pains, the misery, the bad critique, the moment of enlightenment, the arbitrary design etc.) we thought Alter-studio could serve as a box of surprises, injecting some random figures into the system. Introducing arbitrary actions and initiatives into the design process we slowly define/create an organism, one that's capable of acting as a mental cow, becoming big enough to matter, to have an effect. That is done by a series of exercises we define and by both external and internal criticism which contributes to the molding of the architectural end product. The exercises will deal each time with one of the clichés of architectural studio work and the criticism will serve as emergency exits from the all too familiar route of a final project in architecture. By doing so, we hope to brake the deterministic chain of formal discussion and stimulate a different, more open-ended, approach.
