Founded in 1985, BKSK Architects is a New York City-based firm specializing in design that is socially, contextually and ecologically engaged. The firm's diverse range of work includes award-winning cultural, civic, educational, institutional and residential projects. Individual projects designed by the firm have received over 70 design awards, including an AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Award for a LEED Platinum-certified visitor center, an AIA National Housing Award for a new multi-family development, and three Palladio Awards for contemporary architecture inspired by traditional design theory.
BKSK is directed by six partners: Joan Krevlin, George Schieferdecker, Harry Kendall, Julie Nelson, Todd Poisson and David Kubik. The firm's design work frequently explores the relationship between institutional mission, form and place. Each partner works productively with clients to shape a unique and unified vision of their project.
The firm has been at the forefront of the sustainable architecture movement, having been responsible for the design of the first civic building in NYC to earn a LEED Platinum certification and for another project incorporating ambitious flood control strategies. At both sites, natural forces become elements of design, and the building reveals itself as integral to the ecology of the site. In so doing, the architecture enhances ones awareness of the environment, with an emphasis on the qualitative experiences that create a connection to the natural world.
