Ponce
Located within a gated community in the southern hills of Ponce, the site enjoys unencumbered views towards the Caribbean Sea and Caja de Muertos Island. However, the steepness of the terrain and its low-lying level in relation to the street is the critical factor in the design of this single family home.
Early design ideas suggested that the structure is proposed as a compact box within an already leveled portion of the site, with a multi-story organization to deal with a front facade that is partially hidden from the street. The design process led to a programatic organization that placed living areas in a main level closest to the street, a lower garage level, and an upper level to accommodate bedrooms. Because of the fact that the construction area required for these level is more than the level below, the parti for the house was established as a section that increases in width as you move up, each level providing protection from the southern sun to the one below. The resulting form suggested a cave-like body, which in turn implied the notion of an archway that could serve its structural purpose as well as become a unifying element tor the character of the house.
