The APM is an electric train system on 2.25 miles of elevated guideway, with a total of six (6) stations—three (3) inside the terminal loop and three (3) outside the airport. The APM will connect passengers to the terminals of LAX and to new facilities like a Consolidated Rent-A-Car Center (CONRAC), an Intermodal Transportation Facility, and parking areas.
This historic monorail-like system will reduce vehicle congestion in and around LAX, create a connection with LA Metro’s regional transportation system, provide new pick-up and drop-off locations for passengers, and offer reliable, convenient, and safe access to the LAX terminals and surrounding areas.
Groundbreaking for the project is anticipated to happen in 2018, with construction beginning in 2019 and a fully operational system delivered in 2023. Preconstruction activities will begin in the second quarter of 2018. The total 30-year APM contract amount is approximately $2.7B and is the centerpiece of the $5.5B Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP).
The APM system will include nine (9) trains with four (4) cars each carrying up to 50 passengers and luggage, making stops at each station every two (2) minutes. Rides on the APM will be free for all users and will be running at all times.
