House 05

It is a residence located in a coastal community of Tithal, Gujarat, India. House 05 is designed ina manner of what we term it as a “regional modernism”. It is designed as a breath of fresh air amongst the jungle of indiscriminate modern boxes. to bring some nostalgia of the past with modern materials and design strategies of sustainability. Tithal, with its tropical savanna climate characterized by the Aw classification, experiences a unique interplay of weather patterns throughout the year. The region is heavily influenced by the South-west monsoon, bringing copious amounts of rainfall from June to September. This period marks a season of lush greenery and rejuvenation. Tithal can be neatly divided into three distinct seasons: mild winters, warm summers, and humid monsoons, each offering its own set of experiences and challenges. The architectural project on a 2786 square feet trapezoidal plot in Tithal takes full advantage of these climatic variations. Designed in a ‘T’ shape, the house embraces the local climate and topography. The layout ensures that every living space opens up to adjacent courtyards on at least two sides. This thoughtful arrangement facilitates cross-ventilation, a welcome relief during the warm summers and humid monsoons, allowing fresh air to permeate through the interior spaces. the design harnesses the winter sun’s warmth by strategically placing openings in the east and west facades. These carefully positioned openings help naturally heat the house during mornings and evenings, providing comfort and energy efficiency. To shield the interiors from the harsh western sun, the house features verandahs, balconies, and generous 5-foot roof overhangs. These semi-open spaces serve as transitional zones and covered outdoor leisure areas for the family, fostering a sense of connection with the outdoors. To enhance the overall living experience, the architectural project incorporates four distinct open courts, each with its own character and function. These court[1]yards complement the adjoining main spaces, fostering a harmonious coexistence of indoor and outdoor living. In this way, the design not only embraces Tithal’s unique climate but also offers a holistic and sustainable approach to dwelling, seamlessly blending comfort, aesthetics, and functionality
