The Cartoucherie eco district is one of the biggest urban planning projects of the city of Toulouse France, which will develop in the coming years and which could be an example in the new issues of sustainable development in urban centers.
Two buildings, part of the former Cartoucherie weapons factory were saved. These two concrete and red brick halls will be rehabilitated.
The project presented here, deals with the small hall. It will be redeveloped as commercial space, gathering several corner shops.
This future retail hall will take part in giving life to the district and will sustainably meet consumers needs who have chosen to live in an eco/social neighbourhood.
The retail hall and its stores propose both a reafirmation of Toulouse identity and a pleasant area contributing to the urban tissue. These will offer a new way to grasp commercial space.
The Marché des Halles, first opens on a large indoor promenade which aims to create a sort of continuity with the outdoor spaces as to incite to go through the building instead of around it. Inside, the natural light has been devised so as to recreate the atmosphere of an undergrowth. The outside world is brought inside in relation to the environment. The facades open up to enable a communication between outdoor and indoor spaces.
The commercial spaces also play on that communication idea, this time between the store itself and the promenade area. With large window-walls, the stores can open out onto the promenade providing a change of atmosphere and new perspectives between stores. The whole set up brings life to the indoor alley and gives a new life to the covered market.
