LACMA'S Basement

An Interest in narrative sculpture, and it’s ability to hand obvious metaphor to the public, while still being non metaphorical, lead me to questioned if a building could do the same. The function of this design was to be a center for the conservation of narrative sculpture at LACMA campus, importantly the design had to integrate around Peter Zumthor’s planned LACMA gallery.

This cavernous concrete church carved out of the earth is intended for the preservation, storage and display of these large, absurd and physically complex works of art. The building itself scraped from the surface allows itself interplay of tricks between viewer, conservor and artwork.  The building allows a voyeur gazes from public street to private space and back to public street again, the viewers unsure as to whether they are part of the artwork or not.
