SFO, Terminal 2 Air Traffic Control Tower Demolition and Terminal Improvements

As part of a 50/50 joint venture with Woods Bagot, AE3 Partners participated in the design and served as Architect of Record for a new 50,000 sf “BuildBack” amenities building that replaced the original and now demolished SFO Air Traffic Control Tower. The project required the careful demolition of 9 stories of the existing 1954 Central Terminal structure above the T2 Departures Level and the careful integration of two new stories of airline lounge, office space, café, and observation deck above.

In addition to being built on top of one of the busiest terminal buildings in the nation, this project was also challenging as it had both airside and landside access in the same structure and required careful planning of internal circulation, access and egress to the building. The project also required seismic separation from the adjacent structure involving significant structural and MEP systems coordination. Design was completed in summer of 2018 with construction scheduled for completion in 2020.
