Casa Ocoxal

Located in the upper area of Avándaro, Estado de México, the land shelters the course of a river and has a plan for the distribution and use of water, wetlands, planting areas, fruit trees and harvest gardens. A family vacation home is incorporated into this scenario, through a comprehensive creative exercise focused on responding to all functional requirements and giving value to the joint in its completeness.

The shape of the main house arises from the geometry of simple volumes. Composed by two prisms, one above the other, a third volume is formed between them, a void prism. The composition evokes typical construction forms found in Valle de Bravo, such as the cabin with a gabled roof, that proposes a reinterpretation of this iconography with a contemporary aesthetic and more complex functionality.

The upper volume encloses the family’s private spaces, while the lower volume contains the semi-private ones, such as the guestrooms.  The public or shared spaces are located in the void generated by the intersection of both volumes described, which are open and permeable to allow a connection with the exterior.

The project incorporates bioclimatic design and technologies to take advantage of the environment’s natural resources and regulate the different conditions that can affect habitability and comfort, such as humidity and temperature.

Observing and understanding the role of each element present in the intervention space, as well as paying attention to the context’s precepts, were the strategies that gave rise to the whole project.
