The new RISD Student Success Center combines interior renovation and an addition to create a new entry point to the campus as well as a vibrant new hub for student life, set within a historic Federal Revival building. Nestled in the former back of the building (and transforming its former parking lot into usable enclosed space) the contemporary addition, clad in perforated metal, highlights the new programs within: gallery and event spaces, multi-purpose and exhibition space, an expanded mail room, unpacking and recycling, gender-inclusive bathrooms, and a range of student services. The project is driven by flexibility and the capacity to easily transform and serve a range of uses and gatherings—from classroom-sized lectures and workshops, to exhibition and performance spaces as well as meeting and work spaces. The Center is also designed to encourage serendipitous encounters and foster a newly cohesive sense of community.
