Central Piedmont Community College Arts Technology Renovation

Central Piedmont Community College – Central Campus is adjacent to downtown Charlotte. The project is the Center for Arts Technology where it offers students to process their college credit in order to transfer to University of North Carolina, Charlotte and more. The goal in this project is to modify the interior spaces for the better configurations for student use, such as lecture hall, painting studios and workshops. Another question of this building is the visibility of the public. The existing problem is the lack of a clear entrance to guide people into this building. Therefore, the design team introduces a green metal cube and locates above the loading zone and existing painting room. Also, the design team adds a green rectangular box and removes two brick panels to enlarge the storefront on the elevation from 4th Street. This modification is not only to attract attention from the community, but is repositioned the wayfinding system for a clear path from the street level to the main entrance,

The design team sets up 4 goals to success the project:

1. Redevelop the CATS Building façade to more align with the community.
2. Enhance the 4th Street elevation for bringing attention and recognition to the architecture and identity of the main entrance.
3. Bring character and meaning to the new envelope that reflects the ARTS programs.
4. Ensure the new façade and cube development maintains functionality of interior program spaces.
