During the spring semester of 2021, a seminar of GSAPP students, with the guidance and assistance of GSAPP faculty and staff, designed and built Avery SPOT.
SPOT is a temporary pavilion located in the courtyard behind Avery Hall on Columbia University’s campus. The Pavilion has been used to host socially distanced Commencement celebrations, as well as several student organized movie nights and social events. Because the pavilion is outdoors with open air, the New York City public is welcome to access and use the space at their leisure.
SPOT consists of a suspended inflatable, lit by an LED system, a plywood platform, whose profile is a contour of the inflatable above, and four cedar benches, made entirely of single cedar slabs sourced from NYSlabs in Dover Plains, NY. The design and fabrication of these benches were my main contribution to this project, with the help of my Furniture Team partners Kaeli Streeter and Blake Kem.
