The Artists’ Retreat is a three month retreat in the Tomkins Cove Quarry, an industrial natural artifact. Across 10 sites in the quarry, minimal, elemental structures are provided for the artists’ use. It is left to the artists to decide where they live, how they use the architecture, and when, and to what degree, they collaborate.

Each building on each site is a 12’ x 12’ x 20’ box, with 1 to 2 transparent sides (glazing) and 4 to 5 opaque sides (limestone concrete). The orientation of the boxes to each other, combined with which sides are transparent or opaque, creates a unique dynamic at each site.

The only other element that’s provided on the site is 20”x 20” and 16”x 16” wooden boxes, which can be used for storage and as furniture.
