BUSAN’S DNA-GWANGBOK STREET AND PIFF PLAZA REVITALIZATION – 2004

BUSAN’S DNA-GWANGBOK STREET AND PIFF PLAZA REVITALIZATION – 2004

Project Team: Boguslaw Witkowski, Marek Morawski.

1- REVITALISATION CONCEPT AND BASIC STRATEGIES.

In the aim to launch the revitalisation of the centre of Jung-Gu, which is host to various events, festivals, and every day life of Gwangbok Street and PIFF Plaza, we propose to reorganize pedestrian and vehicular traffic patterns while leaving any further modifications of the functional content of the existing buildings to the city authorities' and the owners' decision.

A- Based on the pattern of a DNA double spiral structure, the exclusively
pedestrian curvature on the street level will provide a pleasant walking
space free off all noisy car traffic and CO² pollution.

Only emergency cars (ambulances, police cars and fire engines) will be
allowed on the larger part of the street.

B- The car traffic (30 km/h) and parking area is located on the underground
level -3.90m.

This space is separated from the pedestrian street level by a vegetal
translucent 'membrane' which functions as a biological filter for the CO²
car emissions.

The DNA pattern serves as a design model for the pedestrian paths
positioned above the underground car level. They are integrated into the
vegetal filter which connects both sides of the pedestrian boulevard.

The canopy of the PIFF Plaza is based on the same pattern and serves as temporary protection for various outdoor activities.

C- On the way leading from '2nd Lotte' to the PIFF Plaza, we organize various resting areas where sculptures, garden features, and street furniture are designed to cater to the visitors' resting needs during their daily shopping excursions and/or leisure promenades.

D- Façade Concept along the street:

In the purpose to harmonise and create a new mode of expression for the
commercial public, the existing elevations will be doubled by the newly
designed, state-of-the-art-technology screens which are composed of photovoltaic
bris-soleils, timber strip frame modules, solar protecting glazing, and glass
modules and will serve as a tool for video art, commercial advertising and
movie projection.
