While attending Kansas State University we were charged with completing a construction document set during our fourth year. The project our studio elected to approach was a Natatorium situated on an abandoned industrial site along the river in New York City. The are was littered with toxic landfill and a small inlet that was once used for small shipping vessels.
I wanted to coordinate not only the nature of the natatorium, but also the history of the site and the degradation due to the lack of appropriate activities on the site. The primary structure was cast concrete on the eastern tail, and the main swimming are incorporated poly-carbonate panels and glu-lam timber construction. Zinc panels skinned the north side of the tail and the upper entry level were pre-fabricated and clad in cor-ten steel. The primary structure underwater was pre-cast concrete utilizing bridge technology.
