KAFD Grand Mosque

A landmark within a forest of skyscrapers, the building represents the spiritual center of the masterplan and serves as the Juma’ah (Friday) mosque for the visitors and residents of the mixed-use King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in Riyadh.

The inspiration and basis for the unique geometry of the mosque is the crystalline intersecting plates of a "desert rose" sand crystal. The building is further accentuated by two sculpted minarets rising 60 meters tall. Sited at the confluence of three of KAFD’s shaded paths or "wadis," the mosque is woven into the urban fabric and a multilevel public plaza.

The mosque accommodates 1466 prayer spaces in a column-free prayer hall equipped with a flying mezzanine suspended from the structural concrete shell. Triangulated glass muqarnas, calligraphic patterns, and other design details provide a contemporary take on the use of geometry and ornament in Islamic architecture.
