“The circle . . is the synthesis of the greatest oppositions.
(It) combines the concentric and the excentricin a single form and in
equilibrium. Of the three primary forms (triangle, square, circle),
it points most clearly to the fourth dimension.”
(Wassily Kandinsky Bauhaus Professor)
The brief for this project is to defy the notion of “Form Follows Function”, by transforming an existing building that has outlived its intended use and provide a new function through its transformation. The development requires a building of some architectural merit which is functionally redundant and reimagined in a manner that provides a significantly different use to its original designed intent. The idea of an extreme transformation provides an opportunity to practically and philosophically examine an existing gas holder and its urban context and how to revitalise an obsolete structure, no longer providing a function within its local context and bring to life through transforming it into a youth centre.
