The Knoxville Rowing Association boathouse not only creates a space for rowers to train, but also serves as a catalyst on the South side of the Tennessee River across from Neyland Stadium. The main building houses offices, classroom space, and a workout facility for the KRA members. It also sits adjacent to a small restaurant. The restaurant is open to the public to reinforce the idea of the boathouse becoming a center for the community and gathering point for spectators during rowing events. The separation of the cafe from the boathouse is to draw the line between the public and KRA areas. The boat bays are located under a green roof where spectators can view down into the bays, which creates a monumental effect and heightens excitement as they are able to see race preparations and the final unveiling of the rowing shells from the bays to the water.
