The University of Tennessee’s current university center is becoming obsolete and cannot adequately provide enough space to house the entire program that is demanded of it. This program takes on the challenge of developing an entirely new university center that can sufficiently fulfill the needs of the campus and be flexible enough to change with the needs of the future.
The approach of the design takes student circulation into account throughout the space in context with the surrounding buildings and areas. The design was divided among public/private, function, and volume of noise in relation to the program context. This design approach joined massing of programs in specific ares and then began to form and sculpt the areas into the final design. The skin of the building promotes the public and private areas from exterior visualization. Glass block is used to entice people towards the more active public areas while the brick facade areas express a more private and quiet areas.
