The Future of Nature Integration in the Urban Interior

This project is of a standard module commonly seen on site at over-croweded schools: a portable classroom. This allows for the footprint to be used in infill lots, school yards, parking areas, etc. There is tremendous opportunity to advance the design of this typology.

The design problem: How do you inclusively design interior nature-influenced spatial experiences considering diversity, culture, and identity while promoting play, delight, and beauty?

The goal of this project is to provide low tech / high impact, innovative interior design approaches for safe, inclusive access to nature for children in urban areas. Humans learn and connect with nature using our senses but as children we all have distinct abilities to integrate sensory input. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and many others with no diagnosis at all experience these differences. This classroom is designed for all children to better integrate sensory input. The intention for this space is to include areas and materials that involved tactile touch, such as the sensory bar with counter tops optimal for children’s height, this area has three tubs for sensory activities including digging in sand, dirt, and water play. The design for this classroom provides an educational and also emotional connection to nature.
