Tellico Cabin

Tellico Cabin | Tellico Plains, Tennessee

Hefferlin + Kronenberg Architects designed a cabin on the Tellico River for a doctor and his wife. He has been fishing the Tellico since childhood and the site holds an important sentimental value to him. The banks of the river and the Tellico Valley is where the Cherokee nation gathered for important councils so the site has important historical value as well. It’s a magical place.

The cabins two steeply pitched roofs supported by heavy oak timber were influenced by the couple’s Christian devotion. Their form makes a perfect isosceles triangle and is a reference to the holy trinity. The steep roofs give a cathedral-like interior volume while also providing sleeping lofts for the guest beds. A sky lit screened porch at the entry separates the bedrooms from the living areas.

The cabin is clad in mountain stone and dark stained cedar. The windows are bronze aluminum clad wood by Marvin. The floors and foundations are conventional with a foundation drain conducting water away from the foundation. The master bedroom and living room have exposed red oak timber rafters with a tongue and groove deck stained and sealed.

The ceilings are 3/4” tongue and groove spruce, stained and sealed.  We used reclaimed heart pine on the floors with tile in the bathrooms and laundry.  The kitchen cabinets are Craft-Art with soapstone countertops and stainless steel appliances. The landscaping was designed with plants and vegetation indigenous to the Tellico plains.
