10 Cabins || Ustaoset

In an existing mountain cabin area, we were asked to develop a cabin that could densify the area in between existing cabins with a total of ten units.  Constrained by a strict zoning plan, with clear conditions in regards of roof shape, footprint, building hight, exterior cladding and window sizes, our task was to stretch the given envelope providing a modern energy efficient mountain cabin based on the vernacular.

Situated in a harsh and cold climate in the Norwegian mountains above the tree line, such environments assume the importance of laboriously placing the cabins on each plot. To provide for the useability and quality by tackling conditions such as snowdrift, wind, sun, and vitas, and at the same time reduce the need for ground manipulation. An approach that relies on the ability to understand the physical environment of the situation, turning disadvantages in to benefit.

The layout of the cabin is based on the idea it must provide for a differentiated mix of use from the “extended family” to “guests with children” visiting, working efficiently on a relatively small footprint. This is done with a rational layout where the balance between the common and private spaces is tuned towards this flexible use.
