By expanding the D. N. Greenwald Center, ProHealth Care sought to build in flexibility to support the Mukwonago community’s continued growth and healthcare demand. Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA) designed the expansion to include an innovative, freestanding emergency department, one of only four in Wisconsin. Its presence has increased accessibility to emergency medical services within this rural community, eliminating the need for individuals to travel 30 minutes or more to receive medical care. It was critical to design a site that would enhance the patient experience, support clinical excellence and promote environmental stewardship.
Lean practices were utilized throughout the design process to minimize staff footsteps, foster team collaboration and create an environment that promotes superior delivery of healthcare to patients. Over 50 sustainable features and products were employed during this project, including a live vegetated roof. To bring the landscape and community of Mukwongo inside, extensive daylight, wide open spaces and a biophilic design were incorporated.
The addition includes an enclosed and heated four-vehicle ambulance garage, twenty-five exam and specialized rooms, a trauma room, and radiology department expansion with new X-ray and CT equipment. With the new emergency department, ProHealth Care is better positioned to achieve its mission to “continuously improve the health of the community.”
