The New Madison Square Gardens

Madison Square Garden settles over Penn Station, the busiest train station in the United States. This not only prevents future expansion of the station but creates a severely congested and unsafe environment which hinders the surrounding area. New York City is requiring the movement of Madison Square Garden in 2023, coinciding with the end of their lease. By relocating the Gardens, Penn Station could follow PAU’s plan of retrofitting the existing structure which would expand the concourses to a more open environment. Madison Square Garden is essential to stimulate growth within West Midtown Manhattan. Since Madison Square Garden has moved four times throughout its history, it is reasonable to believe that they can relocate to a nearby location. The U.S. Postal Services, which is currently located 2 blocks west of Penn Station, would be an ideal location. The new location lies within a transportation network that connects Hudson Yards, the High Line, Lincoln Tunnel, and Penn Station together in a multi-modal node within Manhattan. In the effort to boost the socioeconomic standard of the neighborhood, the new Madison Square Garden will focus on creating a public circulatory network that invites visitors and residents.
