“See what a real corner of the world it occupies;how it stands there, away off shore, more lonely than the Eddystone lighthouse”Moby Dick, Herman Melville.
The Maunsell Sea Forts were small-fortifiedtowers built in the Thames and Mersey estuaries during World War II to help defend the United Kingdom, named after their designer, Guy Maunsell. They were decommissioned in the late 1950sand later used for other activities. Aformer Major and his family occupied one of the abandoned forts in 1967 andthey claim it to be an independent sovereign state. The fort is located, approximately six milesfrom the coast of Suffolk, outside the then three-mile territorial water claimof the United Kingdom. Because the fortis located outside of the jurisdiction of any nation it has been used over theyears for a number of seditious activities. My task is to imagine a new life for the fort. I have been looking at the Eddystonelighthouse, located 9 statute miles south west of Rame Head, United Kingdom asa case study to help me understand what it means to live and have a job to doin such conditions. The lighthouse wasoccupied by years on end by a light keeper and his family and they had to dealwith being removed from the grid, life sustenance, protection from the elementsand continuing a task that is of major importance to the development ofcivilization. The new mission for theMaunsell Sea Fort will be just as important, and I will provide a comfortableand safe dwelling for it’s keepers.
