Sungkyunkwan University in Korea was a state-run royal university founded (1398) in early Joseon Dynasty. The purpose of SKKU was to raise state-level politicians and scholars based on Confucianism. Currently, SKKU is the oldest university in South Korea. Currently, the owner of the SKKU is Samsung. The modern pedagogical philosophy of the school rests on tradition and innovation. Department of Architecture (DOA) at Sungkyunkwan University(SKKU) was established in 1970. Initially, architecture undergraduate program in DOA at SKKU was 4-year engineering-based architecture program. DOA-SKKU launched its first PhD program in 1981. In 2003, DOA-SKKU was divided into two departments; Department of Architecture (DOA-SKKU) and Department of Architecture Engineering (DOAe-SKKU). In the same year, DOA-SKKU was accredited 5-year undergraduate professional bachelor program by KAAB. Currently, there are 11 full-time faculty and 39 part-time faculty with student size of 350. The main branch of research areas in DOA-SKKU are Design, History, Theory, Planning, and Digital Design & Fabrication. (Text written, 10 June 2018)
