This strategy involves the creation of balconies with overhangs, which serve as shields against the rays of the sun. This feature not only provides shade but also generates cool and comfortable spaces within the building. The use of overhangs in the design helps to regulate the amount of sunlight that enters the building, reducing the need for artificial cooling systems, and making the living spaces more energy-efficient.
In addition to the terrace massing strategy, the design also prioritizes cross ventilation in each unit. Awning windows are placed at the front of the units, facing the south and west directions, while the balconies are located at the back of the units. This strategic placement allows for the flow of fresh air from the front to the back of the units, promoting natural ventilation and reducing the dependence on mechanical ventilation systems in the day-to-day lifestyle of the residents.
Furthermore, the integration of greenery both inside and outside of every unit is a significant component of the design. Plants and vegetation are used to deflect radiation from the sun, reducing the heat gain in the building. Additionally, the greenery releases moisture into the atmosphere, creating a more humid and revitalizing environment within the surrounding urban Los Angeles area. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the building but also contributes to the overall sustainability of the project by reducing the urban heat island effect and improving the microclimate.
