Inverse

In the fall semester of 2016, we were assigned to choose a fruit or vegetable for studying and investigating the behaviors like deformations deterioration and how to apply our findings as a logical structure to design an eatery place.

My Role: Designer

I think the popcorn was special for me because of its different behavior. For popcorn, everything happens from inside to outside, like a “revolution” or an “inversion.”

Capture every single popcorn phase during its deformation and put all of them together to picture the inverse movement.

Each circle will be made by a single strip of foam material in 1/8 inch width, and its length will be increased by 1/4 inch each time by following the popcorn movement pattern.

The Inverse rules will be applied as we had from inside to the outside. In the site plan, we do have three same triangle shapes that are relative to the symmetrical lines. Then we will Identify buildings that are located inside these triangle areas. The inverse layer with a 30-degree angle has passed over the site plan, and this passing will create ten different moments. Then each will be converted into the 3D phase and combined.

In the next step, all other shapes laid out of the site plan will be removed, and based on our requirements, the best three choices for three floors will be chosen. By connecting them in the right way, we start to simplify and create the primary plan for the eatery.

The final render will show how the two pieces are connected and the atmosphere inside the building.
