About 

Hi I am Zhenqin Dong. I will be graduating from Rice University with a Bachelor of Architecture in May 2017 and I am currently seeking for a position of architectural designer.  During my 6 years training, I developed my interest in improving human experience and accumulated knowledge in designing architectural projects varying in scales and functions.

Design Projects

Poly Chengdu International Plaza (under construction)
24-hectare mixed-use innovative center commissioned by China Poly Group Corporation, Fortune 500 central state-owned enterprise
• Participated in the design of responsive façade system featured with user-friendly, energy efficiency and sustainability
• Prepared technical drawings of façade system for final project delivery and mockup construction
• Collaborated with in-house consultants on designing an interactive LED façade lighting system while minimizing the energy cost

UC Davis Campus Planning
7000-acre campus re-planning commissioned by the University of California, Davis
• Cooperated with SOM project manager on developing comprehensive strategies to re-target user groups, break down previous department silos, increase visibility and ensure the future success
• Assisted Associate Director in creating illustrative diagrams and preparing documents demonstrating design strategies and predicted outcomes for clients

BFS Beijing Daji Competition
36-hectare office complex commissioned by Beijing Financial Street Investment Group Co., Ltd, a large state-owned comprehensive investment group
• Participated in the design of façade system to frame views and engage with the public
• Conducted massing research and proposed one of three schematic design options featured in the idea of terracing while maximizing the Gross Floor Area for economic concerns

Design Project

Zero Carbon Redevelopment
Professor Albert Pope’s research project, sponsored by the Shell Center of Sustainability, addresses the urban implications of climate change and studies a zero carbon emission urban development strategy for Houston Fifth Ward
• Research assistant in gathering and analyzing research data focusing on climate change, wood architecture construction, plantation (bamboo, pine and oak) and carbon sequestration
• Designed four low-rise residential typologies with economic concerns, and created combinations and variations by manipulating four typologies systematically

Design Project

Shenzhen HB City (under construction)
Film theme park planning commissioned by Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, largest film companies in China, with a budget of 3 billion USD
• Collaborated with Principal on targeting three main architecture styles for categorized public groups (visitors, film masters/studio artists, and firm startups/headquarters)
• Participated in developing profit model by bringing cultural creative industries and supporting services into the theme park
• Lead designer of masters’ studios, a 7-hectare community comprised of around 72 individual housing units integrating traditional Chinese elements

Design Project

Harbin Concert Hall (built)
1200-seat cultural facility commissioned by the Harbin Government
• Participated in the design of the main concert hall lighting system comprised of thousands pieces of interactive lighting panels
• Cooperated with Construction Manager and developed the interior louver simulations on computer software for construction reference
