One Hove Park

One Hove Park is the site of a former language school and had been vacant since 2007. The site had two previous planning applications by another architectural practice but both were refused. Yelo won a  planning consent at the first attempt.

Having known the site for a number of years we took a different angle than the previous architects. Our proposal was highly site specific and focused towards providing a sensitive response to its setting. We worked with a landscape designer Nicholas Dexter to create a major feature of the scheme with both individual gardens and a stunning communal garden.

Recently the norm for large residential schemes in Brighton seems to be to cover them in white render. We made a decision with our scheme that it was to be render free, using bricks entirely sourced from Sussex.

The green credentials are significantly enhanced with our proposal. We adopted a fabric first design, where we super-insulated the building to make sure it has very low energy usage. Our landscape designer also did some very clever things with recycling water and reusing the old bricks from the existing building.

This project won the the UK Property Development's 2015-2016 award for Best Residential Development East Sussex and also obtained the bronze Best Brownfield Development 2015 award by WhatHouse? Awards.
