PROJECT #4

PROJECT #4 is a bungalow in an exclusive residential enclave of 106 semi-detached houses and 3 bungalows in Singapore. The bungalow was envisioned, in the Master Plan, as 1 of the 2 ‘highlight’ buildings that provide visual ‘break’ to a group of houses strung together like a ‘necklace’.

The bungalow is sited on an elevated triangulated plot. To avoid a massive building structure, achieve a scale compatible with its smaller ‘neighbours’ of semidetached
houses and introduce courtyards for internal views, the permissible building volume was fragmented into smaller volumes of one-room depth.

The smaller building volumes ensure that all the interior spaces receive light, ventilation and views and are autonomous, independent of each other and equipped with a comfortable equation of communality and privacy.

By grouping the stairs and lift as an independent entity and locating this circulation core, conventionally located within the ‘heart’ of the house, to the periphery and alongside multiple access points, the house achieved great autonomy; Different parts of the house can accommodate different occupants, even occupants outside the household.

PROJECT #4 re-examines the conventional typology of a residential space resulting in a new residential typology that can respond to the changing demographics and family composition of its occupants over time with a level autonomy and flexibility is not common in a private house.
