New Dauntsey House

In 2006 Walters & Cohen won a competition to design a new office building known as New Dauntsey House in the City of London. The project started as a modest eight-storey, 70 000 sq.ft office building at the heart of the Guildhall Conservation Area. The development involved an application for Change of Use, the demolition of two buildings and the construction of a high quality, innovative and sustainable new office building.

Following the involvement of a new development partner, the project increased significantly to include a prominent site on Cheapside occupied by a building known as Becket House, extending the remit to approximately 150 000 sq.ft of new commercial and retail space.

We proposed structural stone for the façades and researched ways to incorporate sustainable materials and environmentally sound practices into the design; working with Arup, we developed a strategy to achieve an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating. The client responded with enthusiasm to the design proposals, and meetings with the City of London planners were fruitful in agreeing the bulk, height and massing of the proposal.

We added value to this complex site through creative planning, high quality architectural design and enterprising lease management.
