Academic project

The Eastern shore of Staten Island has historically been one of Maritime Industry, and the Western shore was the site of one of the largest landfills in the country. Today both are non existent, but the remnants are still felt. This project was an academic exercise where the class was given a site and a set of programs that included a waste to energy and recycling plant. Our studio directive wsa to combine an arts production facility with a waste to energy recycling plant and mediating any conflicts.

Our class site is a plot off of Mulbery Avenue, which was historically a ferry repair terminal, converted to a parking lot after the abandonment of factories, which was partially destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and left deteriorated. My project partner, Dan Good, and I, set out to organize the recycling machinery with specific arts production and material studios to maximize efficiency, build structure using primarily mass timber, and harvest daylight as a way to decrease energy consumption.
