Sunsquare secures UK skylight industry’s inaugural BSI Kitemark

Sunsquare recently obtained the prestigious BSI Kitemark for its entire product range and has become the UK’s first flat roof skylight manufacturer to surpass the British Standards Institution’s rigorous testing standards.

The BSI Kitemark is a world-recognised symbol of outstanding safety and craftsmanship and is a real feather in the cap of the Bury St Edmunds-based company which has invested heavily in its manufacturing methods in recent years.

Sunsquare’s products underwent two years of testing at the BSI labs, carefully examining them for air permeability, weather tightness and extreme wind loading.

The company has always worked hard to challenge the lack of safety regulation in the overhead glazing industry and this acknowledgement gives Sunsquare a ground-breaking mark of quality for its products across the globe.

Justin Seldis, managing director, Sunsquare, said: “Overhead glazing has not previously been regulated. This seemed to us a possible disaster in the making, which is why we have pushed for change.

“The British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemark for our whole product range recognises safety is paramount and sends out an important signal to potential clients about our manufacturing methods.

“Now we have proved ourselves through rigorous tests, we have something that is globally recognised and a launch pad for exporting and expansion.”

With company turnover forecast to grow more than 30 per cent this year, Sunsquare is certainly well positioned to take full advantage of its benchmark status for craftsmanship and safety.

A recent commission demonstrated Sunsquare’s ability to transform the most awkward areas with abundant levels of natural daylight. The company installed 66 metres of flat roof skylights in an L-shaped configuration for a building on London’s world-famous Oxford Street.

The minimal elevation of each skylight results in a finish that’s almost flush to the roof surface, enabling the company to utilise its six main products to offer 140 different roof window combinations.

“As city centres are refurbished, the use of flat roofs has grown,” adds Seldis.

“They fit in with contemporary lifestyles and need, such as energy conservation. Flat roof materials are more sophisticated than ever before. You can have rubber, fibre glass, zinc, copper as well as felt.

“Our products have to be capable of being easily lifted up several storeys. We design them with a pre-supplied, ready-to-fit section that means the contractor can complete the roof prior to the skylight arriving, saving our customers time and money.”

Sunsquare is now embarking on a new five-year expansion plan, designed to grow exports into northern Europe and unveil its new easily transportable skylight range.

“These really are exciting times for us as a company. The Kitemark enables us to trade with confidence all over the world and take our products to even higher levels,” said Seldis.
