Arizona State University Bookstore

The Campus Bookstore renovation for the Tempe Campus at Arizona State University added a cafe and retail display space, expanding and significantly improving the retail experience for students, faculty and thousands of visitors to ASU each year. The addition of new storefront, shade canopy and retail food service vendor encouraged the collegial and social interaction desired by the University and Bookstore management. This project faced aggressive schedule and budget challenges including the need for the bookstore to remain open during construction. Studio Ma met these challenges in innovative ways, raising the existing lobby ceiling to open the store to pedestrian traffic along Orange Way and designing a shade canopy that enables year-round use of the plaza including outdoor retail sales during 'Rush'. Working together with Facilities Management, Food Services, Sodexho and Bookstore Users, Studio Ma's design addressed the programmatic and functional problems of the previous store in addition to giving it a fresh identity.

An award-winning and dynamic graphic package designed by Studio Ma enhances the active quality of the indoor and outdoor spaces and have helped make the Bookstore the success that it is. The project was delivered on time and within budget.
