Road2Future

Pedestrian bridge solution shaped for a location on the old fortress of Nis, a unique landmark of the city. It connects downtown's urban core with "Gradsko Polje", an area accommodating large number of educational facilities (high schools, colleges and faculties). Therefore with development of the site in past decades the bridge is mostly used by passing students.

This link to education, philosophically speaking, also symbolizes a way to the future. Just as the path to a better future is filled with both beautiful and bad experiences, precisely this sentiment is shown through architecture used in the design. Delivered as a road infused with light and darkness, in which nothing is left black or white, for there are many shades of gray. This solution subtly allows the daylight to capture variability of life, creating an impressive play of shadows by the minute.

Furthermore the artificially illuminated floor provides an opposite experience in the night hours. While during the day the light rays penetrate into the construction, at night, rays of light are coming out of the bridge.

This pedestrian bridge design is 19.25m long, 4m wide and 3.5m high. Held by reinforced concrete frames, both ends of the bridge are connected by prestressed concrete beams representing the supporting structure. Wall infill material is actually perforated concrete shell, which is also used for the ceiling. Plan is to add white color to the concrete material in the process of making and to later leave it as such presenting a raw product without any additional finishing.
