Commercial Interior Project: Rosie Pharmacy, Uttara, Dhaka

The pharmacy comes out from the comparatively dark atmosphere of the semi basement level. Controlled focus light are used in the approach way to keep it dark, so that the focus always at the interior of the pharmacy. Before entering the pharmacy the repeated vertical posts on the ramp with the display of the pharmacy products creates an entry direction towards the pharmacy from the road level

Once a person enters the pharmacy, the indirectly lighted slightly angular side wall panels that contain the name of the item of the pharmacy, gives direction towards the lower level stair. The flow of the two levels is not blocked by any solid/ translucent partition; rather a transparent glass façade is provided that offers greater visibility from the entrance. When the client approached us for a low cost interior solution of a 185 sq m pharmacy, we decided to make it as simple as possible. The location of the pharmacy is at semi-basement level of a 6 storied commercial building. The challenge started from attracting the people from road level. The solution is- make the door transparent, focus the logo by placing it on the opposite wall of the entrance. So when a people pass by the walkway, a transparent light box attracts him. While approaching to the entrance, there are display panels on both side wall of slightly sloped pathway. The display panel focuses the relevant images of services of the pharmacy.

At the lower level the shelves surround all the side of the wall surface. A continuous serving counter runs in front of the shelves leaving the required circulation area for salesman. The light color of the floor tiles, gypsum ceiling, shelf, and counter makes the area more spacious. The horizontal shelves are made of glass rather than board for better lighting distribution. Initially the serving counter top were thought to be of light colored board with glass top, but the budget constraint resulted in dark colored top (for easy cleaning).

The free standing two columns are surrounded by several horizontal shelves on three sides, which take support from the board screwed with the column and steel string hung from roof slab to ensure free flow of space and obstacle free visibility. The payment counter is placed beside the lower level stair. Enough space has been kept in front of the counter. Space for store manager and relaxing space for store owner is also provided in the lower level.

The project is done in very tight schedule and several design decisions has been made at site. The simplicity and open nature of the project is well appreciated by the client. One will be attracted to the pharmacy from the outside by its illumination and when inside, rest of the journey will be through the refreshing and tender quality of the space
