University of Oregon Associate Professor Mark L. Gillem, PhD, FAIA, AICP, recently received a national-level design award for the Installation Development Plan at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida from the American Planning Association's Federal Planning Division. Through his firm, The Urban Collaborative, he helped the installation and the prime contractor (Atkins) prepare a plan that accommodates growth while leveraging principles of sustainable urbanism to preserve sensitive habitats and landscapes.

In addition, he also recently received a Commendation Award from the Historic Hawaii Foundation for his firm's development of the master plan for Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Honolulu, Hawaii. The plan was recognized for using preservation goals as an organizing and foundational principle in the planning process. Over 400 participants worked together in a collaborative process to create the award-winning plan that now serves as a model for the U.S. Navy.

Both plans address the impacts of climate change and both planning processes incorporated on-site charrettes, in-depth stakeholder engagement, and application of the latest federal policies designed to reduce carbon emissions, preserve historic landscapes, and maximize the use of infill, mixed-use, and transit-oriented development.

Gillem serves as director of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments and the Urban Design Lab in the Department of Architecture at UO.
