"Utzon's Wings: The Mythology of the Global Architect"
One of the world's most innovative and critical voices in architecture returns to the Städelschule when Mark Wigley, professor and since 2004 the Dean of Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, lectures on the mythology of the global architect this coming Tuesday. Wigley's contribution to the architectural discourse over the last twenty years' has been immense. His books, including The Architecture of Deconstruction: Derrida's Haunt (1993), White Walls, Designer Dresses: The Fashioning of Modern Architecture (1995), and Constant's New Babylon: The Hyper-Architecture of Desire (1998) are essential reading to students of architecture, and his authorship is supplemented by frequent critical contributions to the arts.
Raised and educated in New Zealand where he also took his PhD (1987), Wigley moved to the USA in 1986 to teach at Princeton University. In 1988, he co-curated with Philip Johnson the MoMA exhibition Deconstructivist Architecture, featuring Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Peter Eisenman, Daniel Libeskind, Bernard Tschumi, Rem Koolhaas and Coop Himmelb(l)au. In 2005, Wigley founded Volume Magazine with Rem Koolhaas and Ole Bouman, which serves as an experimental think tank focussing on the process of spatial and cultural reflexivity. Wigley has received numerous awards, among them the Graham Foundation Grant in 1997.
Wigley was appointed guest professor in the Städelschule by the late Enric Miralles, who was the Dean of the Architecture Class from 1990 till 2000. He continuous to give theory seminars in the programme addressing various theoretical and conceptual issues within in the field.
