The Victorian art critic John Ruskin, the pre-Raphaelite art movement in England and how all that and more relate to architecture will be the focus on April 2, 2012 when Marymount Manhattan College Associate Professor Jason Rosenfeld, PhD, an art historian, takes the podium. The lecture will tie into Rosenfeld’s second exhibition which he is currently co-curating for Tate Britain, London, the home of British art from 1500 to now. The exhibit will survey the works of the 19th century Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, England's greatest avant-garde artistic group whom Ruskin influenced. On April 9, 2012 the topic will be aesthetics when Tina Manis, a principal of Tina Manis Associates discusses “In Search of Beauty: Synchronizing Domestic Space.” Manis is an adjunct professor teaching graduate design studio in the department of architecture at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. She has also taught at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Design School, Barnard and Columbia Colleges, and she has taught interior design at The New School/Parsons School of Design. One might say that the best has been saved for last. On April 19, 2012, Preston Scott Cohen, principal chair and the Gerald M. McCue Professor of Architecture of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design will deliver the AIANJ Endowed Lecture. This lecture has been a program in place since 2007 and has included architects Thom Mayne, Daniel Libeskind, and Bernard Tschumi. The event will coincide with the COAD’s annual Design Showcase.
Cohen is the founder and principal of his own firm in Boston, Preston Scott Cohen, Inc. The topic will be “Attenuation.” Cohen is the author of Contested Symmetries (Princeton Architectural Press, 2001) and numerous theoretical and historical essays about architecture.
