Duality is defined as "an instance of opposition or contrast between two equal concepts or aspects of a whole." Within the discipline of dance there exists a myriad of powerful dualities, i.e. - practice + perform, male + female, performer + audience, etc. Initially drawn to the relationship between music and dance, the project evolved to express the primary programmatic elements of the public theater and private school as two separate, yet spatially reliant masses. Given the public nature of the theater and cafe, this mass emerges from the urban fabric and engages with the streetscape. In contrast, the private school is suspended above the public realm and is off limits to everyone but students. A large, open air plaza is generated by this deliberate separation of masses and anchors the building to the surrounding social context of the Arts District. The concept of duality is further explored through materiality, structural systems, and facade fenestration.
