Myanmar Project Proposal

Myanmar’s carving culture originated from woodcarving techniques called pan pu.  Later, woodcarvers applied their expertise what is known today as sinswe pan pu, or ivory carving.  Some of the culture motifs include chiseled ogres told in mythical stories.  Other important subject matter include Buddhas displayed in crouched positions known as mudras, often as part of a larger narrative.  This deeply rooted, yet rare artistic trade, is what makes this proposal a subject of great architectural interest.  The aesthetics of ivory carving was utilized in this project as a means to create a symbolic architectural motif, a high-rise commercial development in the form of a “tusk”.  Most importantly, this tusk is a cultural icon that could be seen as a modern re-interpretation of Myanmar cultural identity in architectural form.
