112st CCNY Athletic Dormitory

This project realizes a housing program for 6 university athletic students. My intention with this project is to focus on bringing natural light into as much of the space as possible, and to reinforce the sense of community. The private spaces will have their own identity within the whole, while the positioning of the public spaces in concert with the circulation and natural light, will give the users a sense of spaciousness. Dark corners and hallways will be memories of an old program usually associated with the Rowhouse program. Another important factor within the scope of this program involves the incorporation of a outdoor courtyard. This space will feel like an extension of the public inner spaces.

I am a stern believer in the phenomenon of Architecture being the catalyst for the rescuing of neighborhoods and communities from decay. When positive change in a community is noticed, attitudes and behavior can also be positively affected. Can this be the departure point for a whole new way of looking at an area forgotten and neglected by most? The first step of recognition and rescue of a decaying neighborhood should be the resuscitation of the quality of life of its inhabitants.
